Google Voice Dial Out

New features you'd like see on SIP Sorcery

Postby bjhn73 » Thu Aug 13, 2009 9:45 pm

If you read the Gizmo5 forums, you'll see a number of users have been having Gizmo5 issues with GV. Many have been unable to get their Gizmo5 softphone to ring when the GV number is dialed. This problem seems to have cropped up last week and is probably on the Gizmo5 end. If you're unable to get this to work or your calls stop working, there's probably nothing you can do. Signing up for a new Gizmo5 account may not help for long since the problem can crop up suddenly for users who've had no problems with the Gizmo5/GV interconnect. Makes me wonder how much longer GV will keep the relationship with Gizmo5 that they inherited from Grand Central. If GV does dump Gizmo5 at some point, I don't expect to see any SIP compatibility at all (except for workarounds which will require a paid DID or one of the limited free ones remaining, like IPKALL).

I think GV will dump G5, because I don't like G5. The ones I did not like all could not stay in business, such as Circuit City and CompUSA.

At least SipGate gives free #, seems much better than ipkall.

Go figure, my sipgate account never works as incoming using sipsorcery/ATA - I get one short ring and straight to that man from Sipgate voicemail. But the strange thing is that Sipgate incoming works fine on mysipswitch, another reason why I hope Aaron keeps mysipswitch around for awhile.

sipgate incoming calls work fine for my account on sipsorcery. It might be worth checking hwo you are managing incoming calls on whichever SIP account you have as the contact for sipgate.

I have found G5 to be quirky at best. For example, it is the only service that I cannot get to work with my old UTStarcom adapter even when the adapter registers fine with the G5 servers. G5 also apparently blocks access from 3cx pbx.

I can't say I blame G5 for that. The 3CX PBX's are known for sending REGISTER storms (30 registrations per second) which is enough to severely impact any SIP Provider. We used to block them at Blue Face for a while as well. It's probably been fixed by now though.

Grampa wrote:In principle, couldn't a similar script be written to work with any provider, so long as there is a DID for Google Voice to call to? I think that would be a real step forward. This is not something I have the skill to do, so I am hesitant to suggest it, but I'm sure many of us would be grateful to be freed from having to use Gizmo5 with Google Voice.

As far as I know G5 is the only provider Google Voice are interconnected to via SIP. There's nothing stopping you using a one of the other DID providers in the Google Voice Call app but it won't get matched and automatically bridged so you'd need to hangup the call and wait for the new incoming one (as per the original way the Google Voice call app worked).

I guess something inherient with my old GV service caused the 500 error.

Your old GV service should also work. There was a bug with HTTP request encoding and Aaron has addressed it a few hours ago.

I believe getting a new G5 is pretty much instant but doesn't it take some time getting a new GV account? How is it that so many can instantly get many GV accounts? I requested mine and it took like 3 months to get an invite from Google finally. (I've had my gmail since 06).

Believe it or not, I bought one on ebay... for $0.99. A small price to pay.

Haha, I just saved 99 cents - I didn't need a new GV, just a new 747 number from G5.

Reconfigured SS with new credentials and it works like a charm!

Thank you Aaron!

Synchron,

Maybe we are onto something.. perhaps the HTTP 500 error is caused by G5 and not GV.
